Patching and updates
We apply security and bug-fix updates to your database engine and its operating system for you. Major versions never change without you.
We patch it for you
We apply security and bug-fix updates to your database engine for you. There is no shell on a database's machine, so you could not, and you do not need to.
What we update:
- Minor releases within your version line, such as PostgreSQL 18.6 to 18.7 or MySQL 8.4.11 to 8.4.12.
- The operating system underneath.
What we never change on our own: the major version. A PostgreSQL 18 database stays on 18, and a MySQL 8.4 database stays on 8.4, until you choose otherwise.
When updates happen
| Kind | When |
|---|---|
| Security fixes, in the engine or the operating system | As soon as they are available. We tell you when the update starts and when it finishes |
| Other fixes | Bundled into one update at most every two months, announced ahead with what it contains and the expected restart |
An update restarts the engine, so expect a short interruption, and have your application reconnect when a connection drops.
End of life
Each version line has an end-of-life date, in GET /database-engines as eol_date. A line stops being offered for new databases at least six months before it. Moving an existing database to a newer major version will be a separate step you start yourself.
