Compute / Resizing
Resizing
Giving a virtual machine or a volume more room. Both only grow.
Virtual machines
A machine's Settings tab lists every size under Resize, with the current one marked. Choose a bigger one, check the cost after the change, and press Resize to ….
- It needs a reboot, with about 90 seconds of downtime.
- The disk only grows. Sizes with a smaller disk than the current one are shown but can't be chosen.
- The machine must be running, with no other change in progress.
There is no upfront payment: the machine is billed by the hour at its new size from the moment the resize completes.
Volumes
On a volume's page, press Resize and choose the new size. A volume on a custom-size offering grows in 10 GB steps; one on a fixed size moves to a bigger fixed size, or to a custom size of the same storage type. The volume must be ready, with no other change in progress.
Growing takes a short while, with no downtime, and can't be undone: a volume never shrinks, so the size you create is the smallest it can ever be (see choosing a size). The bigger size is billed for as long as the volume exists.
The disk grows, but the filesystem on it does not. Extend it from inside the machine afterwards. For an XFS filesystem mounted at /data:
$ sudo xfs_growfs /dataFor ext4 on /dev/vdb:
$ sudo resize2fs /dev/vdb
